Question: What education privileges come with the L-2 Visa?
May they enroll in bachelor's degree programs?
Do they need to demonstrate ability to cover required educational expenses as the F-1 visa holders must?
Answer: Hello,
If your are an L-2 Spouse you may work on a full-time basis in the U.S. with proper employment authorization from the USCIS

Schools each have their own financial affidavits or statements of financial support that students must comply with when applying for admission. It is always best to be in contact with schools in this matter and to get their advice on being able to admit students from different visa categories.

Question: Thank you for a clear and informative website.
I am interested in applying for the MFA in Writing at Columbia University - however I would only be able to do so if I were to receive full funding. Having come across the statement below, I wanted to check: since I do not have this sum of money available does that mean that it would not be worth my while to apply for the MFA?
International Student Funding
As a requirement of the I-20 application for a student visa, international students must demonstrate they have sufficient funds to meet the costs of tuition, fees and living expenses.
Many apologies if I am asking the obvious - I am keen not to waste anyone's time if my application were deemed hopeless from the start!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer: Hello,
Thank you for your question. Have you applied for any funding from Columbia? Have you been in touch with the department head to ask about aid? I don't know if they offer financial aid for this degree program. If Columbia don't offer financial aid I assume you will be looking at other schools and programs that offer aid to qualified students.
If you were to apply for a scholarship and were granted aid money, then on your SEVIS I-20 form the school would fill in the amount that they will provide and the rest of the funding would be met by you. This is clearly stated on the admissions document that the school will send you and this is the document needed to get your visa. And these will be the funds that you will need to document with a bank statement.
Keep researching schools that offer scholarships. You may wish to return to educationusa.state.gov for more information about scholarships.
All the best to you.

Question: Hello. I am a President of All American Aviation Academy, Inc., a flight school. How do I apply and/or obtain a school code required in form I-20 in order for the foreign students to be able to apply for a student visa?
Sincerely,
Marina S. Kastoriano, J.D.
Answer: Hi,
We apologise for the delay in answering your question. Please see the following information taken from the following website:http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/i17_process.pdf
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) School Certification Branch (SCB) is responsible for evaluating Form I-17, Petition for Approval of School for Attendance by Nonimmigrant Student, to determine whether educational institutions meet the minimum eligibility requirements to be approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). When a school’s petition is approved, the school can issue Forms I-20, Certificate for Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status in order to enroll nonimmigrant students in an F (academic) and/or M (vocational) visa classification. While a school’s certification is pending, it may not issue I-20s nor enroll nonimmigrant students on an F and/or M student visa.
The Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, adjudicates applications of sponsors who wish to issue Form DS-2019 for the J-1 exchange visitor (EV) program, a different designation from SEVP certification. Exchange Visitors are nonimmigrants issued a J visa classification in order to participate in programs offering the opportunity for visitors to participate in cultural exchange as au pairs, researchers, teachers, etc.
Certification entails a great deal of responsibility for monitoring, tracking, reporting, and recordkeeping of nonimmigrant foreign students. Certified schools are responsible for ensuring international students are maintaining lawful nonimmigrant status and reporting information on those students to SEVP, through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), when they are not maintaining lawful nonimmigrant status.
It is imperative the school understands the resources, roles, and responsibilities required for being a certified school. After reviewing all information on the website, if you still have questions on the certification process, send an email to the SCB at schoolcert.sevis@dhs.gov.
Regards.
