Percentage of degrees earned by international students is

highest in the graduate divisions, especially the doctoral level.

Doctoral Degrees

Median number of years to earn degree: 7.8

This depends on the field of study: doctorates in the sciences typically take 7 years to complete, whereas doctorates in education take 12 years.

It is interesting to note that only half of those earning doctorate degrees have prior master's degrees in the same field. This illustrates the extreme flexibility of the U.S. higher education system.

Also interesting: 14% of those earning doctoral degrees started out in community colleges. Therefore starting one’s

education in a community college does not block a person’s chances of advancing to the highest academic levels.

Proportion of international students earning doctorates:

Education 9%

Engineering 59%

Humanities 16%

Life Sciences 29%

Physical Sciences 46%

Social Sciences 20%

Other Fields 33%

Total spending on research and development by US colleges and

universities: $54.9 billion in 2009.

Endowments

As at a year ago, 197 US colleges and universities had endowments worth more than $250 million. Most endowments lost more than 20% of their value in 2009, severely affecting their ability to fund international students

and programs.

Endowment per student gives a valuable measure of how well a university can finance its programs. Six US colleges and universities had endowments of more than $1 million per student, and another seventeen had endowments of more than $500,000 per student. Almost all of these institutions

generously fund international students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Voluntary private donations to higher education, from alumni, foundations, corporations and other organizations, totaled $23.7 billion last year, down 23.5% from the year before.

Fields of Study

Business/management/marketing is by far the most popular field of study, accounting for 14% of associate degrees, 21% of bachelor's degrees, 25% of master's degrees, but only 2.5% of doctoral degrees.

In 2008, the United States graduated 15,800 new medical doctors, 3,700 new dentists, 7,131 new pharmacists, and 32,400 new lawyers.
